Bloomberg's Business Week reports that one-third of all the tin mined in the world has come from the Indonesian Islands. Tin is so crucial to the manufacture of electronics that it is the most common metal used by Apple suppliers. Nearly all the work is done by hand for a wage equal to about $5 a day. Five iPads use as much tin solder as the average car. It is a tragic tech secret that many of the tin mines are obviously illegal operations where safety is ignored. Many are unstable because they are dug straight down, deeper, nearly vertical, and more likely to cave in. Residents of the island have few choices other than the pit; they must have money to live.
