Jeff Bezos blasted into space Tuesday on his rocket company's first flight with people on board, becoming the second billionaire in just over a week to ride his own spacecraft.
1. "Best day ever!" Bezos said after the capsule touched down on the desert floor at the end of the 10-minute flight. Would you go into space if given the chance even if it was for just 10 minutes?
2. Bezos came under fire for saying: "I want to thank every Amazon employee and every Amazon customer because you guys paid for all of this." This commentary received immense backlash across Twitter, with many noting that the statement was perceived as disrespectful to employees and customers alike. Labour group and Amazon employees have said the company offers its hourly employees not enough break times, puts too much reliance on rigid productivity metrics and has unsafe working conditions. Do you find his statement tone deaf?
3. Rep. Earl Blumenauer, who is on the tax-writing Ways and Means Committee, proposed on Tuesday legislation that would tax space travel for non-scientific research purposes. "Space exploration isn't a tax-free holiday for the wealthy," said Blumenauer, an Oregon Democrat. "Just as normal Americans pay taxes when they buy airline tickets, billionaires who fly into space to produce nothing of scientific value should do the same, and then some." Do you agree with his statement?
4. If you use Amazon, does this make you less likely to use it going forward?
