Milwaukee will soon become one of the largest cities in the U.S to require all patrol officers to wear body cameras. Mayor Tom Barrett announced his proposal to include a budget of $880,000 to equip all the city's 1,200 patrol officers with body cameras by 2016. "I want our police officers to be in a position to demonstrate beyond a reasonable doubt that they are acting professionally," Barrett said during a news conference.
There have been many advocates for police body cameras after a series of widely publicized shootings by police officers on unarmed citizens. However the cost of body cameras running from $350 to $700 apiece has hindered the widespread adoption in many cites.
Milwaukee Police Chief Edward Flynn states that he and many officers support the body camera proposal. "It will overwhelmingly put in context what they are dealing with, what they are trying to do and what actually happened," Flynn said during a public affairs event at Marquette University last week.
