When Facebook service dies, so does many people’s social life. Monday afternoon marked the second time in a week that the world’s second-most-popular website crashed, leaving its more than one billion active users unable to access their timelines and newsfeeds. The site went down around 12 p.m. PST and all some people could see was a message saying: “Sorry, something went wrong. We’re working on it and we’ll get it fixed as soon as we can.” An hour later, the site came back online briefly for some users before going down again. At around 1:15 p.m., some users could log on via their mobile devices and service seemed fully restored around 1:40 p.m. It’s unclear what caused the service disruption. Facebook also crashed for around 15 minutes Thursday morning, a day after the social media site introduced 360-degree videos as an option to its newsfeed. There were also service issues reported on Sept. 17. The crash seemed like all anyone could talk about in-person and on other, still functioning, social networks. #FacebookDown was the top trending hashtag on Twitter, where many Facebook users cut off from their newsfeeds came to gripe or make tongue-in-cheek doomsday predictions.
