Results: Tesla is adding free Spotify Premium to its cars outside the US
Published on 12/31/2015
Tesla and Spotify have hooked up to integrate the music service deep into the Model S and Model X. This is timely since Tesla's previous music streaming partner was Rdio, which just went kaput. That's the good news. The bad news is that it's currently available only to Tesla owners in Europe, Australia, and Hong Kong. US drivers are out of luck... for now.
But don't think that you need to pay Spotify 10 bucks per month to get any use out of it. Every modern Tesla owner (Roadster drivers are out of luck) will get the update, and you don't need a Spotify account to use it — instead, every car comes with its own Spotify Premium account. That means you'll get access to the full Spotify library from your enormous touchscreen, gratis. And it's really gratis, too, because Tesla comps the mobile data costs.
Of course, if you want to bring over your playlists and other Spotify data from your own Spotify Premium account, you can do that too. Spotify has previously announced automotive partnerships with Ford and BMW/Mini and is integrated with CarPlay and Android Auto, but Tesla’s is the only deal that includes unlimited Spotify Premium with no data charges.
