An Air Canada flight touched down at Vancouver International Airport Monday with an all-women flight crew -- a milestone for women in the world of aviation. The air traffic controller who guided the plane on its approach and landing was also a female. The landing is part of Women of Aviation Worldwide Week events taking place from March 7 to 13. It aims to raise awareness about aviation opportunities available to girls of all ages and to celebrate the accomplishments of women in aviation. "I really hope that girls now, that are going to be thinking about a career in aviation, will go for it," said Janet Hebden, the captain of the flight, at a news conference at YVR Monday. "If they're ambitious and hardworking and that's what they want to do, it's a very rewarding career." Only six per cent of Canada’s commercial pilots and 15 per cent of traffic controllers are women. The outreach initiative takes place every year, in the week of March 8, which is the anniversary of the world's first female pilot obtaining a licence in 1910. That's when Baroness Raymonde de la Roche got her licence from the Aero Club of France. As part of WOAW, participants will take the Pink Paper Plane Challenge where they attempt to break a Guinness World Record for building pink paper planes. The pink planes are meant to be a simple symbol for the week. YVR's control tower is also symbolically lit pink this week, in support of the initiative.
