Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre renewed calls to ban “biological men” from women’s prisons after reports that Daniel Senecal, a man charged with sexually assaulting a toddler, allegedly requested transfer to a women’s facility, citing a transgender identity. Senecal had a prior conviction for a similar sexual assault and is currently held in segregation at the Niagara Detention Centre. Canada’s Correctional Service policy allows transgender inmates to request transfers based on self-identified gender, though most trans women offenders in prison have been convicted of sexual offences, often committed while living as their biological sex. The case has sparked protests calling for stricter sentencing and more protections for victims.
