The U.S. Senate unanimously approved a resolution saying senators should not receive their paychecks during a government shutdown. The measure was introduced by Senator John Kennedy. Under the rule, if federal funding lapses and the government shuts down, senators' salaries are withheld for as long as the shutdown lasts. They only receive the money once the government reopens. If federal workers are forced to wait for their paychecks because Congress cannot reach a deal, senators should feel some of that pressure too. The resolution passed with overwhelming support and will take effect after November 2026. It means that they would have to wait for their money just like many federal workers do during a shutdown.
