At the 2023 rape trial, E. Jean Carroll told the jury: "I'm here because Donald Trump raped me, and when I wrote about it, he said it didn't happen. He lied and shattered my reputation, and I'm here to try and get my life back." The jury found Trump liable for sexually abusing and defaming her, and awarded her $5 million, which grew to $5.6 million with interest. A judge later ruled it was "substantially true" that Trump raped her. Carroll collected $5.6 million from him in July, after the Supreme Court refused to hear his appeal. She told AFP: "So I have the money in my account, and Trump goes off his rocker and tries to bring a court injunction to get the money back! The money is going to go to everything he hates: women's rights, minority rights and the environment. This is a great victory for every woman who stands up when she's been knocked down, and a huge defeat for every bully who has tried to keep a woman down."
