Up to 30% of a family's welfare would be cut if a student didn't make satisfactory progress in school. How do you feel about this? This is appalling. They are trying to discipline the poor by skimming the top off their social insurance. Discipline-and-punish is cruel, and making the poor poorer is abominable.

Research indicates that putting stress on unrelated areas of life in order to produce results in another area is exactly the wrong way to help someone. Furthermore, the link between poverty and poor performance in school is well documented. Such a law would hurt children by taking away a parent's access to resources. Does this affect your initial opinion? Yes. I am more adamant about my opposition to tying welfare to discipline.
