The other night I was at the Y for my sons' swim lessons. I was waiting in the hallway while they changed and some lifeguards were nearby having a conversation. These are all high school kids. They were complaining about some of their tasks at work, and somehow multiplying by 0.5 came up. One girl said, "I don't know why they keep asking me to multiply by 0.5. Should I know how to do that???" And the other teens all stated they didn't know how either. Does it surprise you that kids in high school wouldn't know how to do that? Yes

Just for the heck of it, I explained what it meant to multiply by 0.5 on the way home to my two sons. They are eight and six. I homeschool them and they have not exactly learned this yet, but they have both learned to multiply, to varying degrees. They seemed to grasp the concept rather quickly and are still able to answer questions when asked several days later. At what point did you learn to multiply by 0.5? In elementary school.
