Black History Month was first recognized nationally in a speech by President Gerald Ford in 1976 (1979 in Canada). In that speech, he challenged America to "seize the opportunity to honour the too-often neglected accomplishments of Black Americans in every area of endeavour throughout our history." ---- This is the compressed story of the first African-American character in the Peanuts comic strip: "In 1968, after the death of Martin Luther King Jr.,a schoolteacher named Harriet Glickman wrote to Charles Schulz requesting a Black character be added to the Peanuts comic strip. Schulz created Franklin, which brought what he called "the strongest criticism I can remember." When asked to change it, Schulz told his boss, "either you print it just the way I drew it or I quit. How's that?" -- NPR -- (on a tragic sidenote, the voice of Charlie Brown, Peter Robbins, died by suicide 3 weeks ago on Jan. 18/2022 at the age of 65.)
