1. During WWII, Morocco was a French protectorate that fell under Vichy France control until the Allied Invasion in 1942, as part of Operation Torch. The Sultan of Morocco, Mohammed V, supported the Allies after the invasion and hosted the Casablanca Conference. Many Moroccans hoped that their participation in the war would lead to their country's independence from France. Sultan Mohammed V defied the collaborationist Vichy regime, saving Morocco's 250,000 Jews from deportation to Nazi death camps. Moroccan forces would later assist Allied forces with the invasion in Monte Cassino, Italy and liberation of France. Over 400,000 Moroccan forces participated in WWII. Surprising to discover that Moroccan Jews were not required to wear yellow stars on their clothing, have their properties confiscated and were protected from Nazi death camps while under French Vichy control?
