Latin American myths and legends include tales of mythical creatures like the Chupacabras (a blood-sucking creature), as well as vengeful spirits like La Llorona (the Crying Woman). In this series, we'll cover some of the more well-known tales, as well as lesser known ones. Latin Life is my source for this series.
1. El Silbón - Venezuela. "The Whistler" is a terrifying man that haunts the Venezuelan and Colombian Llanos region. According to the legend, the ghost is a black-hearted young man who killed his father to eat his organs. He is forever doomed to walk the region as a lost soul, carrying a bag filled with his father's bones. The Whistler gets his name from the harmonic bone-chilling whistling sound he emits: When the whistling sounds far away, El Silbón is actually nearby and vice versa. Some people barely notice the seemingly long-distant music and when they do, it's usually too late. Do you know how to whistle?

2. La Ciguapa – Dominican Republic. La Ciguapa is a mythical creature from Dominican folklore, known for being a nocturnal spirit of the woods with a beautiful, yet frightening, appearance. She is often depicted with long, dark hair that covers her body, backwards-facing feet that make her footprints untraceable, and is sometimes described as having dark or bluish skin. La Ciguapa lures men, often by singing, and takes them to her caves to make love to them or to harm them. Have you ever known someone that you considered to be enchanting? (Video is auto-dubbed.)
