History
Latin American myths and legends include tales of mythical creatures like the Chupacabras (a blood-sucking creature), as well as vengeful spirits like La Llorona (the Crying Woman). In this series, we'll cover some of the more well-known tales, as well as lesser known ones. Latin Life is my source for this series.

El Sombrerón - Guatemala. This Guatemalan folktale tells the story of a spooky hobbit-like being who goes out walking after dusk. No one is quite sure if it's a ghost, a demon, a man, or a goblin. All agree that he's very small, dressed in all-black, and dons a big shiny belt, a pair of heavy boots and a large hat that hides his face. He arrives accompanied by black horses with glowing eyes and a guitar whose melodies bewitch those who dare to listen. El Sombrerón seduces young women, wooing them with his sweet voice and beautiful melodies. Once they become bewitched, he stalks them and braids their hair. Under his spell, they become unable to eat or sleep...until, eventually, they die. Do you enjoy acoustic guitar music? (Video is auto-dubbed.)

El Chupacabras - Puerto Rico and Mexico. It is a legendary cryptid monster, often called "goat-sucker" for its alleged habit of attacking livestock and draining their blood. Its appearance is described in two main ways: the original version from 1995 was a bipedal, kangaroo-like creature with spikes with some versions having wings, while later descriptions, especially from Mexico and the U.S., are of a gaunt, hairless, dog-like creature with mange. Many later sightings have been identified as canids with the disease mange, which causes hair loss and scaly skin. It has become a global celebrity being featured in the X-Files, Scooby-Doo, Marvel Comics and a few independent films. Do you believe that Chupacabras actually exist?
