Early America (before it was America) had many myths and legends based on both European and indigenous tales. One such is the New Jersey Devil, a beast that roams the pine forests. One version is that in 1735 Mother Leeds found out she was pregnant with her 13th child, and cried out, "Let it be the Devil!" When she gave birth it was a monster devil baby who flew out the window into the forest. Now that's hard for me to grasp in the 21st century, that anyone from any culture would believe such a thing. How about you? Do you believe in stories like this? yes
