Wilm Hosenfeld was a German Wehrmacht officer stationed in occupied Warsaw. Before the war, he had been a teacher. During the Nazi occupation, he witnessed persecution and atrocities that increasingly convinced him that the system he served was morally indefensible. Instead of simply looking away, Hosenfeld began helping people targeted by the Nazi regime. He used his authority to provide employment, documentation, food, and protection to people who might otherwise have been arrested or deported. At the end of the war, Hosenfeld was captured by Soviet forces in 1945, he remained imprisoned until his death in 1952. Decades later, survivors and historical records documented Hosenfeld's efforts to help others. In 2009, Yad Vashem recognized Wilm Hosenfeld as Righteous Among the Nations. Do you find Wilm Hosenfeld 's story proving that a uniform does not erase individual choice and that even inside a brutal system, some people still choose to help and do the right thing?
