There are very few literary families throughout history. The Bronte sisters Charlotte, Emily, and Anne are one of them. They grew up in the West Riding of Yorkshire, England largely isolated on the Yorkshire moors. Their mother and two eldest sisters died at a young age which greatly influenced their writing. Their father was an Irish Anglican Priest and was left to provide for his four children, along with help from his deceased wife's sister and hired help. Have you ever heard of the Bronte sisters?

During the Victorian Era many restrictions were places on women, so all three Bronte sisters used a male pseudonym to try and publish their work. Although the first collection of poetry only sold two copies Charlotte Bronte was the only one of the sisters who saw considerable success in her lifetime. Eventually the other Bronte novels gained popularity especially, Wuthering Heights. Many adaptations have been made from Jane Eyre including movies, television series, and dramatic plays. Between the three of them, seven novels were published as well as a collection of poetry. Which of the following (if any) novels of the Bronte sisters are you familiar with?

Unfortunately, the Bronte sisters themselves were quite young when they died. Charlotte was 38, Emily was 30, and Anne was 29 years old. However, their legacy is still read today as their home, Bronte Parsonage Museum, is visited every year by hundreds of thousands of visitors. Did you ever visit the home of a writer?
