These childhood upbringings may sound like wild movie plots, but these celebrities lived them in real life, and not only survived, but thrived. Even if you don't know Kate Mulgrew's name, you may know her work. She played Red in the series Orange Is the New Black, for seven seasons she was Captain Janeway on Star Trek: Voyager, plus she spent two years on the soap Ryan's Hope, playing Mary Ryan. Kate was born with a full set of teeth (pearlescent blue ones) and a congenital insensitivity to pain until the age of 4, meaning she literally didn't feel pain. In order to keep her from hurting herself, her parents built her a cage. She has been quoted in interviews with saying "Shakespeare would have had a field day. It's a witch! That's what a witch is." Have you heard of anyone who was born with a full set of teeth or the inability to feel any pain?

Actress Rose McGowan is probably more known for her past relationship with shock-rocker Marilyn Manson and her controversial personal life, but she's been working for years in TV and movies -- most notably TV's Charmed and Robert Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino's double-feature film Grindhouse. She and her family moved the United States, and at 13, Rose not only ran away from home but was taken in by two drag queens and a stripper. At 15, she officially emancipated herself from her parents and moved to Los Angeles to start her acting career. It's a wonder she has not written an autobiography yet! Doesn't her early life sound like the basis for a movie?

Actor Liev Schreiber grew up unconventionally with a hippie mother. She was a cab driver who also made papier-mâché puppets. Liev's mother and father split after his birth, but drama continued between them long after. His father tried to have his mother committed to a mental institution. At the age of 3, Liev was kidnapped by his mother and then by his father. His mom ended up winning custody but bankrupted the family with legal fees. After this, the two moved to a cold-water flat on the Lower East Side in Manhattan, where they lived for some time, frequently with no electricity, hot water, or even beds. Liev developed his love for acting at this point, and credits his turbulent childhood for his ability to adapt so well to any role -- whether in TV series like Ray Donovan or in movies, like Spotlight and Repo Man.
