In the late 1800's through the early 1900's, Madame Abomah had a 30-year career appearing in theatres, music halls, and sideshows around the world as a singer and 7 ft 6 inch "giantess." She was billed as a fearsome Amazon fighter from West Africa, but was actually born in the USA.

While touring with her act consisting of posing, performing feats of strength, and singing, Ella Williams, billed as Madame Abomah, traveled to England, Scotland, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, South America, France, Italy, Switzerland, Belgium, and Cuba. When performing nights at the London Music Hall, she supplemented her income working as a nanny during the day (and is pictured here with one of her charges.) During World War I, it was unsafe to be an American citizen abroad, so Ella returned to the US. The final years of her career were spent in US locations like Philadelphia, and Coney Island in New York. Would you enjoy living a life on the road?
