Results: Mulan 2020

The Disney movie Mulan, which premiered in theatres in 1998 is being remade into a live action movie, set to debut March 27. As Disney did recently with Beauty And The Beast, The Lion King, Aladdin and Lady And The Tramp, Mulan is being re-imagined, and actually is making a major change in the movie plot. Did you see the animated Mulan and are you looking forward to this new film?

Mulan features a very different Disney heroine. To save her ailing father from serving in the Imperial Army, a fearless young woman named Mulan disguises herself as a man to battle northern invaders in China.The big plot change in this version is ythat Mulan's future love interest is no longer in the film. Li Shang — one of the film's overall driving characters, who serves as captain of the Chinese imperial army, Mulan's mentor, and later, as her love interest. Because of the #MeToo movement, the film makers feel it would be inappropriate to have a character who doubles as both a "commanding officer" and a "love interest." The role will now be filled by two characters, one her commanding officer and mentor and one being her future love interest, and equal in the army. Many criticized this move, saying " "Li Shang's entire arc is about realizing that Mulan isn't lesser than because she's a woman, he learns and grows because of her." Do you think this recasting was necessary?

This new version stars Chinese actress Liu Yifei, who came under fire in August for a post on the Chinese social media platform Weibo (where she has 66 million followers) which was seen as supportive of police action in Hong Kong at the height of protests there. #BoycottMulan has been trending since last summer. And, now the film is being criticized in the choice of director Niki Caro, who is not Asian, while many feel an Asian director should have been hired.
