Bonjour Tristesse is a French novel by Françoise Sagan. Published in 1954, when she was only 18, it was an overnight sensation. Bonjour Tristesse was translated into English by Irene Ash in 1955. Ash's translation censors much of the amoral and sexual themes of the original text, removing over 100 lines of Sagan's original writing. A later 2013 translation by Heather Lloyd includes the full uncensored text. My parents had a copy of the book (French version) in the house when I was a teenager but they did not allow me to read it due to its sexual content. However, I was able to read it and later saw the film adaptation after I turned 18. The book was adapted into films twice in 1958 by German-American filmmaker Otto Preminger with an all-star cast and Canadian director Durga Chew-Bose in 2024. Have you ever read or seen the movie adaptation of Bonjour Tristesse, a book written by a teenage author? (The clip is the trailer for the 2024 movie.)
