In the 1960s, Julie Newmar became the first actress to play Catwoman on screen. It was the role that made her famous. But the role she's spent the longest playing is the one nobody cast her in. Her son John was born in 1981 with Down syndrome. At three years old, he contracted meningitis, which left him deaf. Doctors at the time advised against raising him at home. Newmar ignored it. She raised John alone, as a single mother. She taught him sign language. She travelled with him around the world. She gave him space to become an artist, which he did. More than four decades later, John still lives with his mother. He is 45. She is 92. "He is the light of my life," Newmar has said. "I never for one second regretted keeping him with me." In a 2016 interview, she put it another way. "John is what makes my life great. He's the cause of the great expansion of my outlook on life." She played Catwoman for two seasons. She's been John's mother for 45 years. She'll tell you which one mattered more. Have you ever seen Julie Newmar as Catwoman playing opposite Adam West in Batman?
