Nowhere Boy is a British film released in 2009. It tells the story of John Lennon's childhood and teenage years from 1944 to 1960, his relationship with his Aunt Mimi who raised him, and his mother Julia - the two dominant women in the first part of his life - and also his first meeting with Paul McCartney and George Harrison, their friendship, their love for music, and the birth of The Beatles.

From 1946 John Lennon had lived with his Aunt Mimi (Mary Smith) and her husband George after his mother Julia had handed over care of her son to them. Julia was known as being high-spirited, impulsive, and musical, and for having a strong sense of humour. She taught her son John how to play the banjo and the ukulele. Mimi was a caring guardian and was also known for being very strict, compared to the more relaxed influence of George and Julia. She brought some much needed structure to John's life. Lennon kept in close contact with Mimi and phoned her every week until his death in 1980. Have you seen this movie?

John Meets Paul. John Lennon and Paul McCartney first met on July 6, 1957 at the annual Woolton Parish Church Garden Fete where Lennon and his band The Quarrymen were playing. According to McCartney, he didn't have a guitar with him, so he played Lennon's guitar upside down, in order to play it left handed, which impressed Lennon, along with the fact that he knew all the words to 20 Flight Rock and could tune a guitar. Did you know these facts?
They were introduced by a mutual friend, Ivan Vaughan. The two had gone to the fair to watch Lennon's skiffle group The Quarrymen.

Lennon and McCartney not only shared a common love of music, but also bonded over a shared sense of tragedy. McCartney's mother Mary died of breast cancer in October 1956 when he was 14. Lennon's mother Julia was killed by a car driven by an off duty policeman while she was crossing the road in July 1958 when he was 17.

In Spite of all the Danger is the first song recorded by the Quarrymen, then consisting of John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, pianist John Lowe, and drummer Colin Hanton. McCartney wrote the song and Harrison provided the guitar solo, and so the song is credited to McCartney/Harrison. Recording took place sometime between May and July 1958 at Percy Phillips' home studio in Liverpool. Are you aware of the following?
There was only one copy of the recording made, so the group members shared the disc for a week each. Lowe was the last to have it, keeping it for nearly 25 years.

In 1981, Lowe was prepared to sell it at auction, but McCartney intervened and purchased it directly from him. McCartney had engineers restore as much of the record's sound quality as possible and then made approximately 50 copies of the single that he gave as personal gifts to family and friends. In 2004, Record Collector magazine named the original pressing the most valuable record in existence, estimating its worth at £100,000, with the 1981 copies made by McCartney coming in second on the list at £10,000 each.

The third part of the equation that would become the Beatles fell into place when George Harrison joined the Quarrymen in 1958. This clip from the movie includes Harrison performing a guitar instrumental called Raunchy for Lennon. Are you aware of the following?
Harrison was a year younger than McCartney and almost three years younger than Lennon, and although there were some reservations about his age - Harrison had just turned 15 - according to Lennon "We asked George to join because he knew more chords."

George Harrison was a friend of Paul McCartney's. They were students at the Liverpool Institute and had been friends for about a year when McCartney brought Harrison to audition for Lennon.

Harrison's guitar skills were too good for Lennon to overlook as Lennon was still a novice at guitar. He could pick out melodies instead of just strumming chords.
