I don't know about you, but I always loved the up-tempo 1972 cover of "Dancing In The Moonlight" by King Harvest. Written and first recorded in 1970 by Sherman Kelly and his band Boffalongo, it became a big hit for King Harvest, and an instant party favourite. The inspiration behind the song is so much darker than the fun song would indicate. Kelly wrote this song as an idealized vision of peace following a brutal, near-fatal assault on him and his girlfriend by a gang in St. Croix. The song was a survival mechanism meant to create a "peaceful and joyful celebration of life" during his recovery. Despite being told he had low chances of survival, Kelly recovered, later stating he wanted to take a "horrible bummer" and turn it into something positive.
