"Take the 'A' Train" was composed by the jazz pianist and arranger Billy Strayhorn in 1939. He wrote it as a gift for his close friend and collaborator, Duke Ellington, who made it his orchestra's signature tune. The song's title comes from the directions Ellington gave to Strayhorn on how to get to his house in Harlem, which instructed him to take the "A" subway train.
