I recently heard on a syndicated radio show dedicated mostly to obscure 1960's pop, rock, and soul Chubby Checker's '66 non-hit, "Karate Monkey." Long after his run of smashes about the twist, the pony and other sock hop moves had dried up earlier in the decade, he was still returning to the dance craze well in search of a connection with the public. I think it's pretty fun but wonder if anyone has ever danced the karate monkey? Have you busted that move or known anyone else who has?

Checker's ditty got me to thinking that there seen to have been plenty of goofy songs about dances, and no one looks be to having hits with any such songs any longer. Radio jockey-turned-singer fund some of his success mining the same dance-intensive terrain as Checker. He had already sung of of dances named for birds and mammals but, he explains in a brief interview with James Earl Jones accompanying this question that seeing young people dance inspired his then-latest dance number, "The Funky Robot." The funny thing is that, 53 years later, robots CAN dance. Have you ever seen one do so?

One silly step I saw danced to the tune created to accompany (or concoct?) it, at a social held by otherwise all African-American fraternity-like group of which I was a member in college, is Pee-Wee's dance, name for Paul Reubens' man-child Pee Wee Herman character and piggybacking on the movie Pee-Wee's Big Adventure movie. The video for rapper Joeski Love's "Pee-Wee's Dance" shows how it's done. Have you ever taken dance instructions?

The B-52s' shtick that originally brought them attention among punk and new wave audiences is their kitsch appropriation/reinterpretation of early '60's aesthetics. A clear articulation of that on their first album is "Dance This Mess Around." How many of the followings fake dances--with a couple of real ones thrown in?--mentioned in the song would you like to see done (or, maybe, do yourself)?

But by 1973 (same year as the release of the Rufus Thomas included earlier), the dance naming song was m o s t l y over as a pop phenomenon; with that, it seems to follow that Billy Preston would have a hit then with "Will It Go Round In Circles," which contains the lines "I've got a dance/I ain't got no steps/ I'm gonna let the music move me around."
