When Jesus Christ Superstar opened on Broadway in 1971, critics and audiences alike were skeptical about its success. Based on the concept album of the same name, from 1970, a rock opera by a unknown Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice, it is loosely based on the Gospels' accounts of the last week of Jesus's life, beginning with the preparation for the arrival of Jesus and his disciples in Jerusalem and ending with the crucifixion. Flash forward over 40 years, and Jesus Christ Superstar has been playing on a theater stage pretty well every night somewhere in the world, and also was made into a successful movie. Right from the start it was condemned by some religious groups. Tim Rice was quoted as saying "It happens that we don't see Christ as God but simply the right man at the right time at the right place." That of course did not sit well with many religious groups, It was condemned by Jewish groups as anti-Semitic, banned in South Africa for being "irreligious" and banned in the Hungarian People's Republic for "distribution of religious propaganda". Did you see any production of Jesus Christ Superstar?

JCS may have been one of the first musicals with a religious story line, but it certainly was not the last. In fact, one little musical The Book Of Mormon has broken records for selling out on Broadway, on tour and is still playing to sold-out audiences world wide. And it is certainly not holding back in its satire, although religious objections to the show have been rather quiet. In reviews, it has been unanimously praised, with Vogue Magazine stating it is "the filthiest, most offensive, and—surprise—sweetest thing you'll see on Broadway this year, and quite possibly the funniest musical ever." Have you seen any production of this musical?
