Broadway will honor the late Stephen Sondheim with a traditional light dimming. All Broadway marquees will go dark for exactly one minute December 8 at 6:30. The Tony- and Pulitzer-winning composer-lyricist died November 26 at the age of 91. The list of major theater composers who wrote words to accompany their own scores (and vice versa) is a short one — it includes Irving Berlin, Cole Porter, Frank Loesser, Jerry Herman, Noël Coward, and of course, Sondheim. Were you aware of his influence on musical theater, and Broadway, in particular?

It is impossible to measure Stephen Sondheim's impact on the world of musical theatre. During a career that spanned nearly 65 years, he created music and lyrics that have become synonymous with Broadway—including Gypsy, West Side Story and A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum. It is hard to imagine Broadway without him, and his legacy will live on for many years to come, including in Broadway's revival of Company opening December 9. Which of these musicals he created have you seen?

On Sunday, November 28, days after news of his death, a large group, that included Lin-Manuel Miranda, Josh Groban, Sara Bareilles, and cast members from multiple Broadway shows gathered in Duffy Square (the northern triangle of Times Square) to honor the memory of Stephen Sondheim with a performance of "Sunday" from the composer's 1983 musical Sunday in the Park With George. Do you think this is a lovely tribute to the man whose name is synonymous with Broadway?
