James Michener's 1947 Pulitzer Prize winning novel Tales of the South Pacific is the source for this, a collection of short stories about the Pacific campaign of WWII. Nellie is a nurse in love with French plantation owner Emile. The navy men stationed on the island are restless, there's a spy mission, various social issues. Anyone know folks who served in the South Pacific during the later half of WWII, or maybe did yourself?

Some Enchanted Evening - likely the best known tune from this, it became a big hit at the time, detailing the love story between Nellie and Emile. The video if you watch it is from a 2001 TV version with Glenn Close and Rade Sherbedgia. In the better known 1958 version Mitzi Gaynor and Rossano Brazzi play them.
