Next in my series on stage musicals, we trip back to the 1960's. The hippie / youth counterculture with its drugs, sex, race, music 'revolution', the Viet Nam war and all that entailed. "She asked me why, I'm just a hairy guy..."

Aquarius - Hair is a rock musical, story / lyrics by Gerome Ragni and James Rado with music by Galt MacDermot. It got its start off-Broadway in 1967 before moving to Broadway a year later. Released as a single by the 5th Dimension, this is the tune that pulls us into the 'vibe' of the time and became a hit. Born in the early 60's, I would have been too young to encounter the youth culture, social conflicts, any here who were?

Hair - I've never seen this performed live, just the film, but assume the tale is more or less the same. A fellow named Claude meets a 'tribe' of hippies lead by Berger and finds himself pulled into their world. At this point members of the group get in trouble for gate-crashing a fancy party so that Claude can meet Sheila, a gal he's taken a liking to. Ever wander into a party you were not invited?

Black Boys / White Boys - humorous song that can be taken various ways. In the film seems to cover not only interracial relationships, but being gay, the selection for the army, etc. Ever been in a relationship the general population might consider uncoventional?

The Flesh Failures / Let the Sunshine In - in an unexpected twist, Berger gets marched off to Viet Nam. The start of this is rather dark, yet ends on a hopeful note, and sums up the main themes of the musical to me. Can't say I currently see a big 'counterculture' youth movement against current events of today, do you feel this could happen?
