Johnathan Larson - created the tale, music and lyrics. He died hours after the show's final dress rehearsal in 1996. Never got to see his musical become a Broadway hit which won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama and many Tony Awards. Morbid question, but any folk you wonder what else they would have come up with if not died young?
