Broadway's hottest ticket just got much harder to get, if even possible. On Sunday's Tony Awards (the awards given out for Broadway shows) Hamilton, the innovative musical that has been literally taking Broadway by storm, almost swept the awards show, by winning 11 out of a total 16 nominated awards. Hamilton is the somewhat unlikely show based on Alexander Hamilton, one of America's founding fathers. His face is on the ten dollar bill, because while he never became President or rose to an office higher than Secretary of Treasury, he was hugely influential in not only helping to win the Revolutionary War, but in establishing the Constitution and guiding Washington's first administration to create a national bank. Have you been one of the lucky ones to be able to see this show?

Calling Hamilton "a hip-hop musical about one of America's Founding Fathers" only explains part of what makes this show so special. What makes Hamilton different, special, something for the history books, is that it pulls off a unique juggling act: it uses the present to illuminate the past, while looking forward to the future. And it accomplishes all this with music, dance and larger-than-life characters that appeal to every age group. And that explains why, since it opened mid July, 2015, it has sold out every performance. In fact, tickets well into mid 2017 are sold out, and almost guarantees that this show will be running well into 2018...or longer. It very well may break the box office records for the longest running show on Broadway. How many of these long running shows have you seen?

Naturally, in the wake of the horrible Orlando mass shooting at Pulse night club, the Tony Awards paid tribute to the victims and their families. Even in his acceptance speech, the creator and star of Hamilton, Lin-Manuel Miranda, devoted much of his speech to the tragedy, by reciting a sonnet he wrote in light of the tragedy. "When senseless acts of tragedy remind us that nothing here is promised, not one day. This show is proof that history remembers. We live through time when hate and fear seem stronger. We rise and fall and light from dying embers. And love is love, is love, is love, is love, is love, is love cannot be killed or swept aside." Did you see Sunday's broadcast of the Tony Awards?
