The Boy in the Plastic Bubble is a 1976 American made for television drama film inspired by the lives of David Vetter (Sept. 21, 1971 - Feb. 22, 1984) and Ted DeVita (1962 - May 27, 1980), who lacked effective immune systems. The film stars a young John Travolta fresh off his first season of Welcome Back, Kotter and his real life love interest Diana Hyland, who plays his mother in the movie. Diana was diagnosed with breast cancer in '77. They remained together until her death at 41 on March 27, 1977.
