In 1977, the US ABC TV network made news and history by introducing the first openly gay (and, as revealed in the video with this question, apparently also trans-identifying) character, Jodie Dallas--portrayed by Billy Crystal--on a situation comedy. That sitcom, Soap, was roundly decried by many who were dismayed to see what was heretofore unspeakable behavior seemingly normalized by mass entertainment media. Do you recall the furor over the show and its character and/or having watched Soap in its original broadcast run?

Forty-nine years after Soap's premiere, gay and trans-identifying characters in scripted television series and Hollywood movies are commonplace, to the point of possibly being overrepresented (author opinion) in comparison to the U.S. (and Canadian, I believe it would be fair to assume) population, if not even inspiring some viewers to identity or experiment with such behavior and identification.
