Rowan Atkinson has had a stammer for most of his life. It made everything harder. Auditions. Conversations. The simple act of introducing himself. But Atkinson discovered something strange while performing at university. When he played a character, the stammer disappeared. Not reduced. Gone. As long as he wasn't being himself, his speech was flawless. "I find when I play a character other than myself, the stammering disappears," he said. That discovery changed everything. Atkinson co-created the character Mr. Bean with Richard Curtis while still at university. Mr. Bean went on to become the highest-rated comedy on British television in the 90's. Mr. Bean barely speaks. The character communicates almost entirely through facial expressions, body language, and physical comedy. There's virtually no dialogue. You don't need to understand English to understand Mr. Bean. You don't even need sound. A man with a stammer built one of the most recognizable characters in comedy history. And he did it by barely saying a word. Have you ever watched the funny show "Mr. Bean"?
