Arts & Crafts
Rock paintings and engravings are ancient forms of art created by various cultures. They show human figures, colorful animals, unique human-animal combinations, and geometric patterns. These artworks are admired for their detail and sophistication, offering insight into the lives of early humans. In this series we will examine 10 of the most amazing and mysterious examples of rock art from around the world, though there are thousands more that are equally as impressive. Ancient Origins is my source for this series.

The sandstone cliffs of Sego Canyon feature petroglyphs created by Native Americans about 4,500 to 8,000 years ago. These include over 80 life-sized figures with hollow or missing eyes and missing limbs. Some think these figures suggest alien visits, while scholars view them as shamanistic visions. Do you think that we have been visited by extraterrestrial beings in our distant past?

Archaeologists found rare prehistoric rock art in the Scottish Highlands, on a large boulder with cup and ring marks. These carvings might be linked to rituals, land marking, or star mapping. Dating the art is challenging, as it may have been added later, even if the stone itself is dated back to the Neolithic or Bronze Age, around 4,000 to 5,000 years ago. Cup and ring marks are small depressions with surrounding circles carved into rock, often on megaliths and stones linked to religious or ritual use. Some believe these marks may relate to star constellations, land ownership, or boundaries. Do you find megaliths to be fascinating?
