Every generation has its own ideas for being fashionable. I'm a Gen X'er and I still cringe when I think of shoulder pads! Here's a collection from days gone by of some very questionable fashion choices. Ranker is my source for this series. (Right click to view pictures in full.)

Bottle-green dresses were all the rage in the Victorian era. To achieve this lovely shade of green, the fabric was dyed using large amounts of arsenic. Some women suffered nausea, impaired vision, and skin reactions to the dye. But the dresses were only worn on special occasions, limiting exposure to the arsenic in the fabric. The garment makers were the real sufferers - many died to bring this trend to the fashionable set. Is this deadly dress something that you would've just had to have in your wardrobe?

In the 1760s, aristocratic British men donned large wigs with a small hat or feather at the top. The young men who took up this fashion trend reportedly brought it back from their "Grand Tour" across Continental Europe which was intended to deepen their cultural knowledge. The style was, in fact, named after the Italian pasta dish, Macaroni, which was intended to signify sophistication and worldliness. Do you think that these young men had colossal headaches after wearing these towering tresses all day?

15th and 16th century men sought to accentuate their "packages" with codpieces. They were often made of padded cloth or embroidered fabric, though metal codpieces were also worn. Held in place with buttons, strings, or ties, the codpiece was designed to draw praise and raise a man's profile. Even the name was knowingly bawdy - "cod" was slang for scrotum. Codpieces eventually fell out of fashion as doublet styles changed and breeches became more billowing. Is this a style you would've proudly paraded around in?

Crakow's, also known as the Poulaine, were a super long shoe that reigned supreme with men and women across Europe in the late 14th century. They were a quick indicator of social status: the longer the shoe, the higher the wearer's station. Chains were sometimes strung from the toe of the Crakow to the knee to allow the wearer to walk. Sometimes the toes were stuffed with material for the same reason. Do you think that you would've tip-toed through the tulips in this frivolous footwear?

That would be plastic like dance pants/sweats in 1986. They would always come apart at the ankles and you couldn't mend them so you'd just add leg warmers and keep right on dancing. Cheers!
