Results: US attitudes about food waste

In a survey done in the US , 59% believe some food waste is necessary to be sure meals are fresh and flavorful. Do you agree?

The same survey showed that 77% feel guilt when throwing away food. Do you?

Here is some information on the different dates we see on our food. Did you know that the sell by dates aren't meant for consumer use at all? They are there as tools to help retailers ensure proper product turnover when stocking shelves.

Were you aware that best if used by or before date is not a measure of safety and foods can typically be safely consumed after the "best by" or "best before" date, often with minimal, if any changes in taste or texture?

Use by dates usually refer to best quality and are not safety dates. The USDA notes that even if the date expires during home storage, a product should be safe, wholesome and of good quality if handled properly. (The exception is infant formula). Will this survey change how you look at these different dates now?
