1. The marranito (or cochinito de piloncillois or puerquito) is a type of gingerbread shaped like a pig and native to Mexico. Why a pig? Near as my research tells me, some enterprising baker some years ago cut some out in that shape, they sold really well, and the idea stuck I've had marranitos in a variety of textures and recipes, but, generally, their ginger taste is complemented by a strong molasses flavor in my experience. I don't find overpoweringly sweet, and it my be my favorite pastry. Have you ever eaten a marranito?

2. Though King Solomon rightly declared that there's nothing new under the sun, I may have come up with an at least rare idea last I bought a bag of marranitos. Though there's no logical reason why they should be shaped like pigs, why not halve one lengthwise and put some pork between the halves to make a sandwich? So, I grilled up some ham, bacon, and a thin porkchop, dissected one of those piggy pastries, daubed some horseradish sauce and sweet mustard on the protein once they were set on one half of that oinker, laid down the other to top it all, and...yum! Does that combination excite your tastebuds, too?

3. Using gingerbread in a sandwich context may seem unorthodox, but it's not the only replacement for "bread bread," but it's far from the only option. Which of these have you ever used in lieu of bread to make a sandwich?
