I must have mentioned to a certain man attending my church that I enjoy eating collard greens at African-American soul food/Southeastern U.S. -styled restaurants (and, when I can't get to those kinds of eateries, from cans) because he recently gave me a bunch of humongous collard leaves from his garden. But I hadn't a clue as to how to prepare them. With a bit of advice from a South Carolina-born friend, I learned how to cook them. If I say so myself, they were delicious! Have you ever been given, or otherwise obtained, ingredients for food you like but didn't know how to prepare yourself?

Earlier this year I had occasion to write about a chapter of the pacifist-leaning group Food Not Bombs for one of the columns I write and was intrigued by the monthly pop-up pantry they host at a city park. Without taking so much that needier folks wouldn't get some of what FNB's old hippies and young punks (as in punk rocker-looking people; I'm not insulting anyone here) were doling out, I traveled to the green space where they set up camp to avail myself to the---as one not really Hispanic-looking member of their throng put it--"comida gratis" they were offering. Which of the following items I picked up would you have grabbed for your own consumption?

None of the above, either because I'd not eat any of the above and/or wouldn't patronize any Food Not Bombs event (and/or any pantry/free food distribution at all)

Have you ever gotten, or made for yourself, bread so flavorful and substantive that you neither wanted to spread or put anything on it nor toast it, instead opting to eat it as is?
