Croque Madame is traditionally a classic French sandwich that's a variation of the Croque Monsieur. It's made by layering slices of ham and cheese between two slices of bread, typically brioche or white bread. This version is so decadent that it should be forbidden! (in a good way). I made one very large one in the video but the recipe calls for 2 medium ones. Croque Madame stars layers of thinly sliced ham, soft, melty cheese, and an audible crunch as you get into the toasted bread. You'll be saying "Oh la la!" all day long. The Croque Monsieur originated in French cafés and bars in the early 20th century, quickly gaining popularity as a warm, satisfying snack. The name literally means "mister crunch"—aptly capturing its crisp, toasted bread and ooey-gooey melted cheese. Ina Garten's version honors the roots of this classic while amplifying its comfort with the addition of homemade béchamel and a generous topping of cheese. Have you enjoyed a Croque Monsieur?
