Perhaps no subject during this pandemic has stirred up more controversy than the topic of non-medical masks. Part of this of course, is due to the conflicting information we have been hearing from the beginning, with experts in health, science and political platforms flip-flopping between using them or not, and back again. Because this is an unprecedented time (not a phrase, but a fact) and experts do not know everything about this virus, it is understandable to expect the news to change, as new information comes through. For the time being, and it appears to be the consensus of most health experts, masks do help stop the spread of the virus. Most experts agree that everyone should be wearing non-medical face masks when they are out in public, and physical distancing is difficult. Have you been wearing a mask when you are out in public?

Experts agree that masks do not have to be worn all the time. Some sources are now asking people to wear masks even when they are inside their own home, but most agree this is not necessary or even recommended. There are general guidelines that suggest when masks should be worn, and none suggest wearing them all the time is necessary. You should keep a mask on you even when you are outside, because you don't know when and if physical distancing will become a problem. Have you been wearing a mask in your home?

Because we are learning new things about the spread of this virus daily, things could change even before this survey is published, but as of right now, one reason to wear masks is because many appear to be asymptomatic and therefore, we could be out without even knowing we are contagious. To put it simply, MASKS PROTECT OTHERS from you, although there is growing suggestions that they do offer some protection for the one wearing the mask. But, as the motto in Czech Republic states "My mask protects you, your mask protects me." If everyone wears a mask, everyone is protected. Evidence supporting this has been coming in from countries like Japan, Austria, Czech Republic and Slovakia, where masks have been responsible for drastically reducing the cases of Covid-19. These are, and this is important, non-medical face masks (both store bought or hand-made) -- let's leave the medical grade masks for the health care professionals where the risk is much higher. Have you bought, or made masks since this pandemic started?

Myth #1 wearing face masks could lead to carbon dioxide poisoning -- completely unfounded

Myth #2 virus particles are so small they can pass right through the mask -- highly unlikely, and any protection is better than none

Myth #3 pulling your mask down to your chin and up again is fine (see photo) -- once your mask in on and in place, leave it there, so you are not cross contaminating your mask or your face/hands

Myth #4 you can hang your mask from the rear view mirror in your car to dry --this can cause particles on your mask to distribute in your car and they should either be disposed of safely or placed in a plastic bag to take home and wash
