This series shares the backstories (many of which are unsettling) of how some stars acquired scars. I find the adaptability and perseverance of these survivors inspiring.

Few scars are as graphic as that of the late actor Michael K Williams - because of the location. Williams started as a dancer in music videos. On his 25th birthday in Queens, NYC, while catching some air outside of a barroom, he saw some men menacing his friends and suggested it was time to go home. He was approached by a man pacing behind him who retrieved a razor from his mouth and swiped Michael's face. The 3 men escaped their attackers, and rushed Williams to an ER where he waited all night for a plastic surgeon to come on duty. He was left with a scar the extended down his forehead, across the bridge of his nose, and down his cheek. Would you find it difficult not to stare at someone with a scar of this nature?

After he acquired his scar, directors asked him to portray thugs and act out fight scenes in music videos. The late Tupac Shakur saw a photo of him and tapped him to play his brother in Williams' first movie, "Bullet". Praised performances in "The Wire", "Boardwalk Empire", and "Lovecraft Country" followed. In his memoir, "Scenes from My Life", Williams wrote, "I guess the scar gave me an edge. It made me look like the tough guy I wasn't". Do you think a lot of men try to appear tougher than they are?
