Results: This survey is about water, a marriage of two abundant elements that, once combined, make a stable couple in a strange relationship. The focus of the survey is just how strange this coupling is.

Some of us take water for granted, perhaps because we have access to it when ever we need it. Others focus a large part of their day obtaining enough water for their very survival. There is not a shortage of water, just an inefficient method of distributing it. Where it is needed most desperately, there is water available but there is a quality control or access problem that makes it unusable. After completing this survey you may change your attitude towards this basic compound.

There is a huge quantity of water on our planet. A large chunk of it is sea water, frozen at the north and south poles. Huge quantities of this frozen ice break off each year and float away while gradually melting. These icebergs can travel huge distances before they finally are gone. Here are some thoughts about that. Which do you find interesting?
When seawater freezes, it undergoes a desalination process that expels much of its salt content. Thanks to this phenomenon, sea ice contains significantly less salt than the water it came from. Arctic first-year ice has an average salinity of only 4 to 6 parts per thousand, and sea ice four years or older is nearly free of brine.

When seawater that has been frozen for years eventually melts, the water released is dramatically fresher than the ocean around it. In these cases, when nearly all the brine is gone, the ice can be fresh enough to provide drinking water when melted

Some of this old ice could be towed to countries that have a shortage of potable water at a much faster rate than allowing the ice to drift randomly. Some of these bergs are huge and only 10% of the berg is above the surface - melting is slow.

The largest iceberg in the world originally calved from the south pole in 1986 and remnants of it still exist. In its prime, the iceberg weighed nearly a trillion tons and was roughly the size of two London's or a small country. That is a lot of fresh water.

Most solids sink in liquids. Because ice is less dense than liquid water, it floats, a property essential for aquatic life in cold climates.

Water is the ultimate renewable resource. The water you drink today is the same water that existed on Earth for billions of years, meaning some of it was once drunk by dinosaurs.

Most items contract as they get colder and freeze. Water expands when it freezes. This expansion is an unusual property that causes pipes to break when the water inside freezes then expands. This also can cause rocks to split and concrete to crack.

By applying an electrical charge (such as from solar panels), water molecules can be split into their hydrogen and oxygen components (H2O). These gaseous elements can be compressed and stored in separate containers. The two components can then be "burned" as fuel to provide energy such as to produce electricity or power a car with water as a byproduct. This is the ultimate clean and renewable energy.
