The Special Olympics, originally called Camp Shriver, was founded by Eunice Kennedy Shriver in 1962 and started in her backyard. Many intellectually disabled children weren't allowed to participate in sport activities. A local woman informed Eunice that she was having a hard time finding a camp for her special- needs child.
