Approximately $1.87 trillion in U.S. currency is in circulation, mostly ($1, $5, $10, $20, $50 and $100 bills). With the increased use of credit cards and other cashless payments, currency may be coming "rare". However, America has produced many now rare forms of currency throughout financial history.

The half cent coin was introduced as a result of the Coinage Act of 1792 and had five different designs. All of them were variations of Liberty herself, and were made of 100% copper. It was discontinued by the US mint way back in 1857. Do you have any rare or old coins?

The noble three cent piece coin existed from 1851-1889. They were made of silver, which attributed to their downfall. This precious metal was frequently hoarded during the Civil War, meaning that it wasn't as widely circulated as intended. Were you aware of this coin?

Two dollar bill - featured Thomas Jefferson on the front (or obverse, as it is called) and John Trumbull's painting "Declaration of Independence" on the back (reverse). The U.S. Currency Education Program estimates that there are still 1.2 billion in circulation today. The note is still issued by the Federal Reserve Board, which orders new currency from the Treasury's Bureau of Engraving and Printing (BEP) every year. However, the $2 bill is only ordered every two to four years, mainly to replace notes that have received too much wear and tear to remain in use. Because $2 bills aren't used as much, they don't need to be replaced as often. Since some think the bills are uncommon, they treat them that way, inadvertently ensuring that they maintain this "rare" status. Do you have a $2 bill?

The $500 bill - hasn't been in circulation since 1969. It is unique among discontinued currencies in that it is still considered legal tender. First introduced on a federal level in 1862, the high-denomination bill featured everyone from John Quincy Adams and William Tecumseh Sherman to Abraham Lincoln and William McKinley. Now a collector's item, it is worth much more than $500 -- if you can get your hands on one. Have you ever seen a $500 bill?
