Living
With prices going up on everything, off-grid living starts to sound more and more appealing. It's something I had considered for a long time, but my wife doesn't agree. I still like to think about it, but from a practical sense, I doubt I will ever do it.

The old concepts for off grid living sound like going back to 15th century living and giving up on society. But it doesn't really need to be that way. Sure, initial investment will be higher, but you can have electricity to power a nice home, satellite internet for staying connected and quite a lot of tools/automation to help with the work around the homestead. You still need to work a lot, but things are improving considerably.
Would you consider off-grid living if your house still maintains all the modern feel?

The biggest draw-back in off-grid single-home builds is that regardless how you build it, you can't escape working to get food. Not even for a short while.
The concept of self-sufficient communities has steadily been gaining interest. Basically, multiple families pool their resources to build together and share in the work. This has the benefit of allowing you to rest when sick, maybe even take "vacations" and pool expertise with other people too (i.e. plumbing vs electric work vs green thumb vs raising animals and so on). And with multiple families pooling their resources together, the end goal of becoming self sufficient becomes much more attainable.
Would you consider such a community?
No, I like my life as it is.

That's the very definition of communism, which is a proven failure. The settlers at Jamestown tried it, and when they began to starve they went to an every-man-for-himself way of living. 0.10% 1
