A few years ago I somehow 'inherited' being the admin of the local Lost & Found group on Facebook as the original admin moved away. It has about 5000 members. Last year I was invited to moderate the local Rant & Rave page of 18,000 members. In the past month I was invited to moderate the Rant & Rave page of the adjacent city to mine, which has 117,000 members.

There are about 6 of us moderating the group of 117,000. It feels like a full time job and is unpaid. I check it every few hours to see if activity needs to be approved/denied. I feel like I spent 1 to 2 hours a day on this. Would this be too much effort to be putting in for an unpaid position?

I find it an interesting hobby to look at what ppl are posting (bad driving, stolen bikes, lost items, complaints about restaurants, squabbles with ex's). Is it still worth it to do all of this for free? Comment pls in the optional box if there is a a way to make any kind of money running groups over 100,000.

  • If you get joy and/or satisfaction, stick with it. Otherwise, pass the baton.
  • NA
  • This is exclusively a personal choice. Is this hobby aspect of this enough to justify the time commitment? Only you have the answer to this question.

Lastly, there is some satisfaction in running these groups. On my Lost and Found group I admin, I saw a post 2 weeks ago by a couple whose beautiful puppy had been stolen from them. The next day I was at a place where I saw a woman with the stolen dog! I connected with the couple, who called Animal Control who retrieved the dog and returned him. I feel like I am a pet detective. Is doing this type of social media work worth it ?
