Michael Lee and Angela Peang married in March 2019, and are happily expecting their first child together. Just one slight problem...Michael and Angela are first cousins. Michael and Angela got married in Colorado, where it's perfectly legal for first cousins to marry each other if they want to. For reference, Angela's dad is the older brother of Michael's mom. Unfortunately for these two, they live in Utah, where it is not legal to marry your cousin. In Utah, this means that they could face up to $10,000 in fines and jail time. Utah bans marriage between first cousins because the risk of medical conditions in any potential babies goes up a few percentage points. But Angela and Michael say this doesn't worry them, as they went through genetic testing. What is your opinion on this?

This is wrong on so many levels. First cousins should not be allowed to marry, and definitely not have children

The couple is fighting for Utah to legalize marriage between first cousins. They were raised Mormon, in which a small sect of followers still practice polygamy. "You'd think they'd want to be more mainstream and less strange, considering what they already do with polygamy," Peang said. Don't you find it strange that a state that does not allow first cousins to marry allows polygamy?

It was not uncommon in the past for cousins to marry, Franklin Roosevelt's wife, Eleanor, was his fifth cousin once removed; she didn't even have to change her name. And scientific geniuses like Albert Einstein and Charles Darwin married their cousins, too. For much of human history, these unions weren't considered bad. Do you personally know any cousins who got married?

First cousins share 12.5 percent of their DNA. (Siblings, as well as parents and kids, share about 50 percent.) Any child that results from a first cousin union is, therefore, going to have a pretty substantial portion of similar-looking genes. And that can pose a problem. It's estimated that 4 to 7 percent of children born to first cousins are likely to have birth defects, compared to 3 to 4 percent for children whose parents are more distantly related. Genetic testing would be very important, if the couples chooses to have children. So, even though it is not as big an issue as some may think, if children are involved, there is more risk.
